In its annual ranking of the Global 100 most sustainable companies, media company Corporate Knights cited the importance of metal recycling as part of its decision to name ISRI member Schnitzer Steel as the most sustainable company for 2023. Noting Schnitzer is the first steelmaking company to earn the top spot in the Global 100 since the list began in 2005, the outlet said the recognition highlights “the growing importance of both the circular economy and low-carbon metals in creating a more sustainable future.” Read the full story here.

Schnitzer Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tamara Lundgren said using recycled metals is being recognized by both governments and corporations as an important strategic way to achieve carbon reduction goals. “It is a differentiator for metal producers and fabricators and a critical part of every community’s commitment to supporting a circular economy and decreasing material going to landfills,” Lundgren said in a statement last week.

Sims Limited, which includes metals recycling among its many sustainability services, came in 14th in the annual ranking. Alistair Field, Sims Limited’s chief executive officer and managing director also talked about the role they play in sustainability as well as corporate progress made in decarbonization over the past year. “This year, we continued to challenge ourselves to do better, for example by accelerating our carbon neutrality target by 12 years, as a way to demonstrate our commitment to decarbonizing our own operations,” he said. “In addition, we continue to provide solutions for our customers to reduce their own carbon emissions.”

Other ISRI members were cited by Corporate Knights, including:

  • #7: Canadian-based sustainable design and engineering firm Stantec
  • #20: Canadian packaging, hygiene and recovery company Cascades
  • #38: Global consumer goods company Unilever
