Louisiana communities battered Aug. 29 by Hurricane Ida are facing a new danger: the possibility of weeks without power in the stifling, late-summer heat. Ida ravaged the region’s power grid, leaving New Orleans and hundreds of thousands of other Louisiana residents with no clear timeline on when power would return.
At least four deaths were blamed on the storm. Two people were killed and at least 10 others were injured when a dark, rural highway collapsed as Hurricane Ida blew through Mississippi, authorities said Aug. 31.
Ida came ashore on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 storm that breached New Orleans’ levees, devastated the city, and was blamed for 1,800 deaths.
Our thoughts are with all of you who have been impacted by Hurricane Ida. As the Voice of the Recycling Industry, and more importantly your ISRI family, we sincerely hope that you, your families, employees, and surrounding communities are all safe.
In such challenging times, our industry, our association, our region, and our members are there for each other. As you work to recover, we want to let you know that ISRI is here to provide assistance and is working on a list of resources to help your business recover as quickly as possible. This includes your Gulf Coast Regional Chapter, who is here to assist in any way it can.
In our efforts to provide you with the best support, ISRI would like to know how your facility has been impacted and when you plan to resume operations. As we are informed of your plans, we will be able to pass that information along to state officials and inform them of when your facility will be able to accept materials once again.
